Recently, Juniper Village at Mount Joy proudly hosted an important workshop sponsored by the Lancaster Activities Directors Association and Lancaster LINK. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults make up a significant, and growing, share of America's 65+ population. The numbers of LGBT older adults are expected to double in size over the next several decades, reaching more than 3 million by 2030. This means that services providers, including caregivers, will increasingly be called on to provide services and support the unique needs of LGBT older adults. 40 attendees, most of which work in the healthcare industry with seniors, were led by Terri Clark, MPH, and covered topics in this training including: culture, needs, and unique considerations of LGBT older adults; why LGBT older adults are less likely to access health and social services; how caregiving for an LGBT older adult differs from caregiving for their heterosexual peers; best practices, policy and practice areas for increasing inclusiveness and safety for LGBT older adults and their caregivers.
Terri Clark has been doing work in health education, training, and facilitation for nearly 25 years, and is currently the Coordinator of Prevention Services at ActionAIDS in Philadelphia, PA. Terri is a member of Widener University’s Consortium on Sexuality and Aging, and an adjunct instructor at Arcadia University. She is a certified trainer with the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging and serves on the American Society on Aging’s Leadership Council of their LGBT Aging Issues Network (LAIN) constituent group. She is also an advisory board member of Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s PrimeTime Health Committee. Throughout her career in public health, she has been an advocate for gender equality and sexual health across the lifecycle.
